Winter it is common to have cabin fever in upstate New York. IGNITE the Winter is a special event staged by the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce to be held in downtown Auburn on March 2nd from 5:00 to 10:00 PM.
The purpose of the community festival IGNITE the Winter is to shake the winter blues. Its mixed fare includes music, street performances, carriage rides, ice sculpture demonstrations, and food.

There is a cook-off competition for ‘Best Chili, chowder or soup’, prepared off-site. The competition offers prizes and recognition judged by Celebrity judges and a People’s Choice Award. The judges include Auburn Mayor Michael D. Quill, Downtown Auburn Business Improvement District Chair Paul Ringwood and Cayuga County Office of Tourism Chair Steve Lynch. An award ceremony will be held at 8:15 PM.
During the festival each competitor sets up a station to serve their cuisine for event attendees @ $1 per 2 ounce serving. The cook-off competition will be set up along Exchange Street Mall from Genesee Street to Loop Road. Competitors will serve from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on the day of the event.
Each participant is required to signup in advance. The deadline is February 13, 2012. To compete at the event registration and a food service permit are required. Participants are needed to conduct their own cleanup following the award presentation.
Auburn is a city of 27,687 within Cayuga county New York. It is north of Owasco Lake, one of the Finger Lakes, 25 miles south west of Syracuse. Auburn is near the intersection of route 20 and route 38, south of the I-90 Thruway.
The Tuscarora, an Iroquoian American Indian people inhabited the area near Auburn, called it Ahsku. European-Americans founded Auburn during post revolutionary days in 1793. It was originally named Hardenbergh’s Corners after its founder, but renamed Auburn in 1805.
Wintertime can be a dull time of the year due to a limited choice of activities due to the cold weather. Here’s an event that can provide a welcome change of pace as we await coming spring.
