LifeWay Christian Bookstores reneges on pledge to Susan G. Komen Foundation

LifeWay Christian Bookstores had, until yesterday, according to CNN, sold pink Bibles with the provision that one dollar from each Bible sale would be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation for funding of breast cancer awareness and screening. Lifeway stopped selling the pink Bibles noting that they could not support an organization that had “even an indirect relationship with Planned Parenthood” even though they had pledged $25,000 to the foundation.

The president and CEO of Lifeway, Thom S. Rainer, noted that Lifeway could no longer sell Bibles that would lead to donations being sent to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation because the foundation has donated money to Planned Parenthood in the past.

Persons may wonder if Lifeway would be satisfied if no money raised from the sale of pink Bibles went to fund abortions or to Planned Parenthood. Not so. Rainer notes, in the release, “Though we have assurances that Komen's funds are used only for breast cancer screening and awareness, it is not in keeping with LifeWay's core values to have even an indirect relationship with Planned Parenthood.”

LifeSiteNews.com, a very popular “non-profit internet service dedicated to issues of culture, life, and family” with writers and founders who “have come to understand that respect for life and family are endagered by an international conflict […] caused by secularists attempting to eliminate Christian morality and natural law principles which are seen as primary obstacles to implementing their new world order” has lauded the decision of LifeWay.

An article from LifeSiteNews notes, “[W]e can pray the controversy will bring more awareness to Komen's unwise giving practices. We commend LifeWay for choosing the right path, even at what was likely their own expense. This choice honors God above money. We pray God will bless that.”

According to an article from The Tennessean, "The Komen Foundation issued a statement of its own, saying that LifeWay's decision was disappointing and that all funds from the Bible sales would go to breast cancer programs. Andrea Rader, from the charity's marketing communication department, said LifeWay had pledged $25,000."
