“Project Runway” (Lifetime) can be seen each Thursday evening at 9/8 p.m. Season 13 had 19 contestant designers competing for a winning $300,000 package. After last week's episode called, “Rock the Wedding” on Aug. 28, 2014. Nine designers remained in the competition after Char Glover was sent home. The host, Heidi Klum always says, “Welcome to the runway. As you know in fashion, one day you're in & the next day you're out.”
Tim Gunn is the mentor to all the design contestants. He now sits with the judges to watch the models “walk the runway” wearing each contestant design. He does not judge the fashion. If Tim disagrees with the elimination of any contestant by the judges. He gets to bring back one contestant for a second chance. He brought back Amanda Valentine who was eliminated a few years back.
Heidi Klum says that none of the judges will know who designed what, when the models “walk the runway.” They judge the fashion by each weekly challenge. Heidi, Zac Posen & Nina Garcia are the main judges. Zac is replaced when he is out of town. There is a different celebrity judge each week who joins the panel.
After the judges score each design. They bring out the three highest scores & the three lowest scores. The middle scores of each design make it to the next round of competition. The judges take an up close & personal look at the low & high scored designs. As the contestants sit in the backroom. The judges discuss workmanship, detail & creativity. They also focus on which designer lacks discipline & ideas with fashion.
Here is an example from episode 5 called, “The Klum of Doom” (8/21/14). The design contestants got a chance to create a red carpet evening dress for Heidi Klum at the 2014 creative “Emmy Awards.” Many failed the challenge because it was hard to create an evening dress in one day. The judges took a closer look at the green dress made by Korina Emmerich. They noticed that she desperately pinned & quilted her dress at the last minute. They thought it was awful & called it amateur hour.
Several designers created beautiful dresses & Sean Kelly won the challenge. When the judges took a closer look at his dress. They loved his originality & were excited by his workmanship plus detail. Heidi wore his dress on the red carpet before the creative “Emmy Awards.” She had gotten rave reviews for Sean's blue & black fringe, bare-back, sexy dress.
