When Debbie Bean and her husband Forrest decided to build a round Deltec house, she did something she had never tried before: She designed her own interior layout.
“I knew I wanted the kitchen in the center and everything just kind of worked from there,” Debbie said. “It took a lot of time — probably six months off and on making changes — but it was fun.”
Debbie, who sells kitchen cabinetry, and her husband, a retired tool and dye maker and jack-of-all-trades, built their dream home in 2004 outside Gifford, Ill., 125 miles south of Chicago. They had previously restored an old farmhouse nearby and wanted a home that would showcase the 11 acres of forests and farmland that had been in her family since 1875.
Searching online, Debbie found Deltec Homes, the nation’s leading builder of “panelized” round homes. They are houses built from wall, floor and roof segments manufactured for maximum precision and energy efficiency at Deltec’s factory in Asheville, N.C.
Debbie and Forrest made two trips to the Blue Ridge Mountain town to visit Deltec and check out one of its model round homes. They chose a model called the Windsor with 2000 square feet per floor. Their one-story house also includes an attached 800-square-foot round garage.
In part 2 of this story, learn how the Beans designed their home.
