Life in prison for dad who tossed his 2-year-old daughter to her drowning death

A cold-hearted father who strapped his two-year-old daughter into a car seat and then tossed her off a bridge into a creek where she drowned, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The sentence was handed down on May 28 in a Freehold, N.J. courtroom.

If he had his way, Superior Court Judge Anthony J. Mellaci would have sentenced Tierra Morgan-Glover’s father, Arthur E. Morgan III, to death, according to USA Today. But the Garden State abolished the death penalty in 2007. During Morgan’s sentencing, the judge told him that if New Jersey hadn’t abolished the death penalty, “You would be candidate No. 1. Your actions were horrific, unthinkable and appalling."

Reportedly, before tossing that child strapped into her pink-flowered car seat into the creek, Morgan, 29, weighted down the car seat with “a five-pound metal car jack.” Morgan told police that Tierra wasn’t dead when he left her in the water. He said he could hear her crying as he drove off to a nearby liquor store to have drinks with a friend.

Morgan was found guilty on April 3 for murdering Tierra on Nov. 22, 2011. The travesty occurred at Shark River Park in Monmouth County, N.J.

Morgan was supposed to return his daughter to her mom on Nov. 21, 2011 following a custody visit, according to the Huffington Post. Instead, Morgan threw the innocent child to her drowning death to get back at Tierra’s mother, who had just broken off wedding plans with Morgan.

When Tierra’s body was recovered from the water, prosecutors said there was only “one tiny black and purple sneaker sticking out of the water.” Teens walking the stream found Tierra the day after Morgan tossed her into the murky New Jersey waters. She was still strapped into that deathly car seat. For more on Morgan's day in court, see the video accompanying this article.
