According to the Administration on Aging, the number of Americans age 55 and older will almost double between now and 2030; from 60 million today (21 percent of the total US population) to 107.6 million (31 percent of the population). And the number of Americans over 65 will more than double, from 34.8 million in 2000 (12 percent of the population) to 70.3 million in 2030 (20 percent of the total population).

Face it, we are all getting older. The chances that you will live to be 90, has nearly doubled over the past 40 years. The good news is that today older Americans are better educated, healthier, and having more fun. We ain't your grandma's generation!

"We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing." George Bernard Shaw“

The internet abounds with stories of Betty White, Christopher Plummer, adorable 91 year old drummers, bike-riding centagenarians, and and even a 95 year old sprinter who set a world record last year.

We no longer have to accept the idea that aging must involve the deterioration of our bodies and minds. According to The Legacy Project, being old is much better than we ever expected. Eating healthy, staying active, maintaining a strong social network of family and friends, practicing kindness, compassion, and gratitude, are all key ingredients to aging well.

In Eastern cultures, the elderly are revered for their knowledge & wisdom & the natural aging process is seen as beautiful. It's the process of transformation, the celebration that nothing is permanent & perfection cannot be achieved.

"The best classroom in the world, is at the feet of an Elderly Person."

It's time we realized that aging is not a disease to be feared, but a privilege worthy of respect. Older people should not be treated as a burden to be endured. Our Elders are a vast and usually untapped, reservoir of wisdom and experience. Their stories...our stories are not only educational, but highly entertaining. Thanks to better education and healthier living, life isn't over at 65, 75, and even 95!

"Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.” Henry Ford
