After an eight year absence, My Brother's Place is back to welcome lunchtime diners and serve the neighborhood a generous helping of hospitality. The newly renovated space on the second floor of Trinity Episcopal Church is a unique combination of restaurant and mission.
On weekdays from 11-2 (when downtown street meters are free), lunch is served, offering a "mix of comfort food and dishes from Toledo's international heritage." The menu features a satisfying variety of sandwiches, soups and salads, including daily specials and familiar alternatives for kids.
I was by no means disappointed with the turkey, cranberry, and provolone wrap with a side of fresh vegetables. My dining partners enjoyed the hot roast beef dip sandwich, white chicken chili and broccoli salad (featuring dried cherries and pecans), which I was fortunate enough to sample and will definitely be ordering in future! The mushroom soup is surprisingly--but not distractingly--spicy, and also worth a try.
In addition to the variety of menu items, the specials also change daily, making this a lunch destination of which diners are not likely to grow tired. And with sandwiches averaging $4-5, and soups $2-3, it's also a very affordable place for reliably good food. (Sandwiches can also be ordered by the 1/2). But that's only half the story...

Owner Elizabeth Sorge (who also operates "Cater Me") explains that Monday evenings are intended for community events to serve the local unhoused population. Currently, a group of men from Cherry St. Mission gather monthly for a hot meal and fellowship. Future possibilities which Sorge hopes to see are events such as healthy cooking classes or guest speakers. Contributions from donors and revenue from the adjacent banquet and meeting rooms help to fund this community outreach. Additionally, the restaurant currently employs several persons who have been unhoused, one of whom has recently been able to secure an apartment.
The sunny vantage of Toledo through large windows on the building's East side completes the friendly dining experience at My Brother's Place. I am sure to return to this tasty little slice of downtown--and bring more friends!

Nice job Ms. S. I enjoyed your article and I liked how you find faith and life intertwined with the communities in the breaking of bread.
