According to an official source of the Libyan National Transitional Council, former Libyan Prime Minister Al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi was arrested on Wednesday, and sentenced to a 6-month jail term on Thursday on grounds of illegal entry into Tunisia.
Tunisian officials have said that al-Mahmoudi had tried to flee Libya through the border and was caught with two other people, without visas, in the southern town of Tameghza, near Tunisia's border with Algeria. The former prime minister for Qaddafi is not on the list of individuals wanted by the International Criminal Court at the Hague.
The NTC is anxious to have al-Mahmoudi back in Libya, so that he can face justice in his own country.
As opposition forces continue to fight Qaddafi loyalists, NATO's Lt. Gen. Charles Bouchard told reporters that these loyalists are running out of places to hide, and are finding themselves completely surrounded. NATO's mission in Libya has been extended an additional 90 days by the North Atlantic Council.
Though Qaddafi's whereabouts are still unknown, revolutionary fighters believe he was hiding in Sabha, but managed to escape.
The National Transitional Council was given recognition as Libya's sole legal authority by the United Nations, where the new flag has taken its place among the organization's member nations. Mustafa Abdul Jalil, acting Prime Minister and president of the NTC is currently in New York attending the General Assembly's 66th reunion.
