A group story time is a great place for children to practice both reading and social skills. Many Dallas-Fort Worth area libraries offer story times, and Irving families can take advantage of story times at all Irving Public Library branches.
Participating in library story times has several advantages for children:
- They get to hear books read aloud. This can help them develop a lifelong love of reading. It also sets a good example when they see their caregivers and other adults enjoying literature.
- They have a good time at their pace. Many story times—including the family story time at the Valley Ranch Library (401 Cimarron Trail)—include age-appropriate singing, dancing and discussion to keep the kids engaged.
- They start to feel at home at the library. If they have a good time at a program designed for children, they see that the library is a fun, welcoming place to be.
- They get a chance to socialize. Children who stay at home with a caregiver may not have much opportunity to see other children. A story time is a chance for them to learn and practice social skills.
Story times at Irving libraries are available in English at all branches and in Spanish at the Central Library (801 W. Irving Blvd.) and the East Branch Library (440 S. Nursery Road, Suite 103). A complete schedule with times and locations can be found on the Irving Public Library’s website.
