Libra in Our Souls

Libra Birthdays: "Those born under the sign of Libra have a passion to socialize and make society better . . . Libras usually try to create harmony between everyone and everything at all times . . . Justice is very important to them . . . Cruelty is always frowned upon by a Libra . . . Most Libra men and women have a sense of caring for society . . . "

Libra's ruling planet is Venus, and its color is pink.

Unless there may be some universal influence of Libra in 2012-13, indeed throughout all of history, or maybe at least one planet positioned in Libra in every person in the world's birth chart, all the complexities of astrology seem to be inadequate to explain how we ALL feel some tremendous pressure to have and/or make things balanced and perfect, in our lives and in the world.

People often express profound disappointment in God when experiencing shock from worldwide disasters, which include catastrophic oil spills, earthquakes, hurricanes, bloody wars, etc. It deeply affects our sense of balance when we are witness to school kid disasters such as the Newtown, Mass. massacre.

Even many little annoyances, such as those arising out of the technical age we live in, bug us all out of proportion to their ultimate significance. We can spend an inordinate amount of time trying to navigate Facebook, for instance, with all its mysterious buttons and ways of finding what we're looking for. But then, this is great brain exercise, and it's good for us. Though it can certainly be frustrating, we are always learning something. A really big problem in our technical age is the recorded telephone menu instead of a person. Then we are put on hold forever and sometimes cut off. When we are lucky enough to get a live person on the line, we believe in God again.

Now maybe the Christmas cornbread wasn't what you'd hoped for, and you wasted all that aluminum foil to wrap it up and freeze it before finally taking it out of the freezer, crumbling it all up, and feeding it to the birds and squirrels. So? That's one way the little creatures will get several nice, nutritious meals. And you were disappointed because the guests didn't eat even one of your nuts and cookies which you'd so thoughtfully arranged for their dessert. Well, that left you something to chomp on while on the bus going to work.

Things will never turn out exactly the way Libra in our souls wishes they would. But we can make adjustments. We can support the survivors in Haiti after the earthquake, who rejoice that they are alive. We can always do something about the situation.

This is the same thing as the struggle through depression. We must cultivate an attitude that the delicate balance and peace we seek can be found in our own hearts.

Etty Hillesum wrote, in a concentration camp, "God, please grant me one brief line of verse . . . "
