Fort Lauderdale based Liberty Power Corp., was founded in 2001 by David Hernandez and Alberto Daire, its CEO and President, respectively. The initial focus of the company was providing small and medium sized businesses with the same low cost energy and exceptional customer service typically reserved for the largest energy users. Over the years, that focus has expanded to providing low cost energy and exceptional customer service to all types of consumers, be it small business owners, large Fortune 500 companies, government accounts or residential customers.
Liberty Power is the largest independent retail electric provider and thirteenth largest non-residential retailer in the United States. In 2012, it earned the distinction of being the largest Hispanic owned energy company in the United States and the eighth largest Hispanic owned company overall. It is also the first minority owned retail electric provider with a national footprint, currently serving well over 100,000 accounts in 15 states and Washington, D.C.
The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) is the federal agency dedicated to the growth and global competitiveness of U.S. minority owned businesses. The agency created the Minority Enterprise Development Week Awards to recognize individuals and companies who exemplify entrepreneurial innovation, a commitment to creating jobs, and providing quality products & services.
Liberty Power Corp., was among the minority owned businesses recognized in the 2013 National Minority Enterprise Development Week Awards, receiving the minority retail energy firm of the year award.
Liberty Power was nominated for the award by retail giant Costco. Shay Reed, energy buyer for Costco said, “Nominating Liberty Power for this honor just seemed like the obvious choice and we are thrilled they won the MEB of the Year Award. Costco looks for suppliers who generate value and Liberty Power does just that in a variety of ways including innovative product of offerings, exceptional customer service, and significant cost savings. Liberty Power has always made meeting the customer’s needs – our needs – a priority and they are truly deserving of this award.”
David Hernandez said, “We are humbled and proud to receive this award, and do so on behalf of our team members and all the businesses, households and Fortune 500 customers we serve.”
To add credence to the type of company Liberty Power is, CEO David Hernandez was also named ‘Businessman of the Year’ by the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in October 2013.
