Orlando-based Liberty Council is updating its Naughty & Nice list for the 2011 holiday season in a desperate effort to get consumers to care.
Liberty Council (LC) ranks retailers based on how often they use the word Christmas in their advertisements. Clearly the Stavers (founders) have no problem at all with the commercialization of their sacred holy day. In fact, if you don't exploit Jesus' (supposed) birthday to sell your laptops, you're naughty in their opinion.
The nice list this year, their store names adorned with jolly Santas (the more Santas, the more you exploit Christianity for monetary gain!), include:
- Christmasplace.com--well, duh.
- Computergear.com--with a whopping 14 references to Christmas found in a search
- Disney.com--probably only got the one Santa because of the whole Gay Days thing
- L.L. Bean--for advertising "same day delivery even on Christmas Day" right on the front page!
- LifeWay Christian Stores--really?
- Wall Builders--They're kidding us, right?
The good list does include large stores such as Walmart, Kohl's, JC Penney, Sears, and Target.
The naughty list includes American Eagle Stores--for some years now they've simply refused to honor Christmas as they should. Liberty Council opines that Aerie, a brand of American Eagle, features "'Merry Aerie Gifts' on home page donned with very skimpy lingerie model" and "Christmas search revealed only one brief item (pun intended)."
So, the LC wants a brand that features skimpily-clad models to plaster Christmas all over its webiste?
EB Games made the naughty list for standing up for religious inclusivity. The LC complains that the "Manager explained in 2010 GameStop’s philosophy that the company supports '... many religious holidays such as Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Yule, and other holidays. GameStop does not discriminate against any religion ....'” How awful! Stunningly, the LC admits that a search for "Christmas" at the site actually revealed "only ten manufacturer-labeled 'Christmas' items."
Only ten?
It's difficult to take Liberty Council's Naughty & Nice list seriously when they chastise the Gap for a "flagrant disregard for Christmas." It's the Gap! Your Orlando Atheism Examiner never thought she'd ask this question, but...what would Jesus think?
Meanwhile, don't tell them about Mrs. Butterworth's Holiday Limited Edition syrup bottles or the Acura Season of Reason Sales Event. The holidays are everywhere!
Liberty Council exemplifies the opposite of what Christians are always saying Christmas, and their religion, are all about.
