Libertarianism 101: What's the libertarian position on immigration?

"To be a foreigner is not to be a criminal. Yet our government treats as criminals those foreigners not lucky enough to win the green-card lottery." -  Immigration Quotas vs. Individual Rights: The Moral and Practical Case for Open Immigration, Harry Binswanger, Capitalism Magazine.

In 300 words or less...

In the America of Objectivist Ayn Rand there's open immigration for those who merely look different, talk funny, and dress weird, but closed borders for criminals, terrorists and carriers of infectious diseases. Government keeps those types out.

In the America of libertarians, government comprises maybe one percent of society. The rest is composed of sovereign individuals who reject coercion, respect property rights, and hold land in private hands, out of government's greedy grasp.

No multitudes swarm the borders to swamp the system of taxpayer-funded social services and medical care and public schools because none exists. It's all private, run for profit or charity.

The only people crossing the borders are property owners or those invited to visit, hired to work, engaged in trade, or arrested for trespassing.

With almost no "public land" there's nowhere else they can rightfully go.

Then there's today's reality.

Americans have fallen behind in baby-making. That means fewer and fewer young workers paying higher and higher taxes to support more and more aging and ailing elderly.

This Republic of Ponzi is unsustainable.

The only way to save the American socialist collectivist welfarist ant farm is to draft more young working taxable bodies into the system. Naturalize all illegals, document them, socialize them, domesticate them, and above all, tax the living bejesus out of them.

That will keep Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid and Universal Everything going for another fifty years, at which time the crisis will become the problem of a new pack of clueless politicians.

The old guard anti-immigrants will die out and newbie second generation Americans will arise to select yet another group of immigrants who look different, talk funny, and dress weird to blame instead of blaming the real problem: statism.

And libertarians will still prefer scenario one or scenario two.
