Liberals' priorities shine through in new "health care" bill

As the new health care bill comes up for a vote this week, Americans may be interested to know that the purported new health care bill has little to do with health care. The new bill, available online, contains many interesting stats. Citizens would do well to contact their representatives with such information regarding the bill and urge them to vote against it.

Abortion is mentioned 25 times throughout the bill. Pages 110 and 171 may be of particular interest to citizens, for they have confirmed suspicions that some types of abortions, at least, will be covered, and that at least one plan in the Exchange must provide abortion coverage.

Although abortion is referred to 25 times too many in the bill, the word tax is mentioned 214 times. Page 297 of the bill declares that individuals without "acceptable" health coverage will be taxed 2.5 percent of his or her income. Quite an odd step to take when Democrats have claimed that this bill is about providing health care coverage to those who are uninsured. What happens to those who still cannot afford health care coverage? If they cannot afford to purchase it, they certainly cannot afford to pay a penalty tax for not having it. Democrats have included this tax to bully and pressure Americans into purchasing health care whether they want it or not, lest they have their income taxed! Way to help the American people, democrats! Many have already stretched their income to the limit. A tax for lack of healthcare coverage would break them, even if purchasing coverage didn't.

Finally, in one of the most interesting stats of all, the word "shall" occurs a total of 3425 times in the bill. According to the legal definition of the term, "shall" is used to indicate a command, or a mandatory requirement. Democrats' abundant use of this term throughout the bill has made it quite clear that this bill has little to do with healthcare. The true and primary objective of passing this bill is not to provide healthcare for those who lack it (as the tax on those who lack coverage also made clear), but to expand the power of the government in order to exert greater control over the American people

The new health care bill is concerned with providing taxpayer-funded abortions, inflicting new and increased taxes on struggling Americans, and, most ominously of all, establishing a degree of control over Americans that this country has never seen. If the bill passes, the democrats will have accomplished the biggest power grab in American history, diminishing citizens' freedoms. Congress plans to vote on the bill this week. Americans must contact their representatives and urge them to vote against this monstrosity. Personal liberty and the fate of this country are at stake.

Absolutely. I have health care now that I managed to find a decent job, but when I was working in retail a few months back, there was no way I could afford insurance. It was either eat or go without it. Like you said, having an extra tax is just going to hurt the people who can't afford it.

One of the unprecedented things is this: NEVER before in the history of the country has the federal government *required* that individuals have to buy any individual good or service.

Also in the power grab territory: health-care represent 20% of the economy. Government Motors is bad enough, but it's chump change compared to Obamacare.

The bill is unconstitutional. Democrats want to push this through at any cost and they're trying to use the commerce clause of the listed powers of Congress to ram it down our throats. The problem with this is that while Congress may regulate commerce (and there are different ways to interpret that, since regulate has at least 3 different definitions), it still does not have the power to regulate people. If they force us to buy healthcare, they aren't regulating commerce at all, but American citizens. If it was really about regulation of a product (in this instance, healthcare), why would they force us to purchase it?

David, I agree totally. Healthcare is one fifth of our economy and people want the government running that?! When has the government responsibly ran anything? They run everything they touch into the ground. Look at social security! When they pass this bill, our economy could very well be wrecked beyond repair. That's assuming they don't mess it up--but they always do.
