Even though the members of "X Factor" U.K. boy band One Direction have said in many interviews that they have no plans for solo projects, One Direction's Liam Payne has now revealed that he's done a solo project: He recorded a song with R&B singer Miguel. In addition, Payne (who turns 20 years old on Aug. 29, 2013) said he got "really, really drunk" with Miguel during the recording session.
In an interview published by The Sun on Aug. 23, 2013, Payne had this to about his collaboration with Miguel: “But as for the song, I want to try and give it to someone because I think it’s a really good dance song. Don’t worry, I’ve listened to it sober.”
Payne did not say where the recording session took place. In the United Kingdom and most other countries in Europe, the minimum legal age to drink alcohol is 18 years old. In the United States, the minimum legal age to drink alcohol is 21 years old.
As for One Direction's third album (whose title and release date are to be announced), Payne hinted that the members of One Direction wrote more songs on the album than on One Direction's first two albums. Payne told The Sun that it's a risky move that will be “open to a lot of criticism ... I hope people don’t switch off just because we’ve changed things up a little bit.”
Payne has been described by his band mates as the "Gary Barlow of One Direction." Barlow (who is the chief songwriter of Take That and is a judge on "The X Factor" U.K.) is known for his clean-cut, sensible persona.
But Payne says that he's not as serious as he once was and has lightened up more in recent weeks: “Let’s just say I haven’t been keeping up the Gary Barlow persona, I’ve let loose. It’s a new dawn for Liam. I’m having a laugh now. I’ve let loose in the sense that I haven’t got that much to worry about any more."
In May 2013, Payne and dancer Danielle Peazer ended their on-again/off-again relationship that lasted for nearly three years. Sources told the media that the former couple broke up because Payne's fame and demanding work schedule took a toll on the relationship.
In the summer of 2013, Payne began dating Sophia Smith, one of his former school mates. Smith has been getting threats and other harassment from jealous One Direction fans. Payne was presumably talking about this problem when he tweeted on Aug. 21, 2013: "Always sad to get on here to read horrible stuff about someone you care about... There is that old saying tho if you ain't got sh*t nice to say then f*ck you."
