Lexus recalling 270,000 IS models from 2006-2012

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed on Jan. 31 the previously announced voluntary recall by Lexus of certain model year 2006-2013 IS vehicles for a wiper arm defect.

The problem is that the nuts holding the wiper arms may be insufficiently torqued such that a heavy load of snow, ice or other material may cause the wiper to not operate. A non-operative wiper could reduce driver visibility such that a crash results causing in damage to property or injury to persons.

The recall is to inspect and replace the nuts on the wiper arms with an improved design and tighten them to proper specs.

Lexus will be sending letters to owners notifying them of the defect in late February and recall repairs will begin shortly after.

The IS vehicles total 267,718 and include:

  • Lexus IS250 and IS350 - 2006-2012
  • Lexus IS250C and IS350C - 2010-2012
  • Lexus IS-F model years 2008-2011

Owners who have previously incurred repair expense for this problem prior to this notice will be given information in the notification letters on how be reimbursed.

Affected Lexus IS vehicles owners are urged to contact Lexus (Toyota) at 1-800-331-4331 for more information.

No accidents or injuries resulting from the problem were reported.

(An earlier report by the writer that this recall was for the same airbag problem involving 2003-2004 Toyota Corollas was in error and has been retracted.)
