Levin, Mayer, TMZ, and the Twitter challenge that netted $ 25,000 for animal rescue organizations

Last week musician John Mayer posted a challenge on his Twitter page, offering to give $25,000 to the charity of TMZ's choice if they could find a mug shot of him.  The intrepid detectives at TMZ, the online and on TV entertainment news source, rose to the challenge discovering records that indicated Mayer had been arrested on May 26, 2001 in Atlanta for driving with a suspended license. That naturally resulted in a mug shot and by afternoon  TMZ had the mug shot and posted it on their TMZ website.

TMZ's Harvey Levin, managing editor of TMZ.com and executive producer of TMZ On TV chose two animal rescue organizations as his favorite charities, Pet Orphans of Southern California and Ace of Hearts.  Mayer made good on the bet and made two donations of $ 12,500 to each.

Pet Orphans of Southern California focuses their efforts on rescue and adoption, providing assistance for low-income families and seniors whose pets need medical assistance they cannot afford, teaching responsible pet ownership and helping pet owners solve behavioral problems that threaten their ability to keep them. Frankie, the beautiful Siamese-mix pictured here is a shining example of the wonderful animals Pet Orphans is trying to find a new home for.

Ace of Hearts takes in dogs who are out of time in area shelters, cares for them in volunteer foster homes, and then works to find permanent adoptive homes.  They also try to educate the public on how to be responsible pet owners and on the importance of spaying and neutering.  The cute doggie pictured above?  That's Jia Jolie, one of many adorable canines available for adoption from Ace of Hearts.
