LeVar Burton, Jared Padalecki criticized for Philip Seymour Hoffman death tweets

When it was discovered that Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead of an apparent drug overdose, many took to Twitter to express sympathy and pay tribute to the 46-year-old. But some were not so kind, according to Feb. 3 report from US Weekly.

LeVar Burton, best known for his role as Geordi La Forge in “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” tweeted that the 46-year-old Hoffman was a “talented” actor, but then joked about his death on Feb. 2. Here is the unedited tweet:

“Damn, #PSH was SO talented! However, if Y’all should find me dead with a needle in my arm, in my underwear… please put my pants on!”

After receiving some backlash, Burton continued to stand by his comment. He replied to a few criticisms and then made a public announcement, saying, as written:

“No matter how you slice it, PSH wasted a great gift! Lash out at me if you want to… I ain’t goin’ out like that!”

Burton was still tweeting throughout the day about other subjects, including Super Bowl 48 and how his followers should send Brent Spiner a birthday wish. Just a few hours ago, at 1:41 p.m., Burton issued an apology tweet, saying:

“I apologize for being insensitive regarding the death of PSH. No excuses, it was wrong! May he rest in Peace!”

All of Burton’s original tweets are still on his page.

Jared Padalecki, one of the stars of “Supernatural,” didn’t think Hoffman’s death should be referred to as “sad.” Here is Padalecki’s unedited tweet, which he later deleted:

“‘Sad’ isn't the word I'd use to describe a 46-year-old man throwing his life away to drugs ‘Senseless’ is more like it. ‘Stupid.’”

Padalecki then released another tweet, saying that he didn’t mean to call Hoffman “stupid” or that addiction isn’t real; he just has a different take on it.

“I didnt mean PSH is stupid or that addiction isnt a reality. I simply meant I have a different definition of ‘tragedy,’” he tweeted.

Padalecki added: “When I think ‘tragedy’, I think of St Judes, of genocide, of articles I read in the paper. But, yes, either way, a death, is sad.”

Hoffman, who won an Oscar for his lead role in “Capote,” was found dead in the bathroom of his New York apartment with a needle still in his arm, according to The Wall Street Journal.
