Leu Gardens gardening classes: March 2013

The March 2013 class schedule is now available. Leu Gardens provides a wide variety of gardening and garden themed classes to those in the Central Florida area (and many that drive from quite a distance). Why not start your year off with some great classes and new gardening ideas? All classes are held at the beautiful Leu Gardens, 1920 North Forest Avenue, Orlando, Florida. Please note that all classes require pre-registration.

GARDENING AND LANDSCAPING CLASSES:

Rose Growing Simplified
Saturday, March 2 (9:30 am - 11:30 am)

Want to grow roses in Florida? Have you tried without success? Discover how easy roses can be grown in your backyard from the Garden’s Director and author, Robert Bowden. Learn good varieties to use in Central Florida, how to control pests in an environmentally sensitive manner and learn the one secret that will almost guarantee flowers in your garden. After this class you’ll wonder why you haven’t tried growing them before!

Sexy Succulents - Tips for Success with These Hot Plants
Tuesday, March 5 (7:00 pm - 9:00 pm)

Succulents and cacti never make demands. They are the ideal garden bed companions for our Central Florida landscapes and containers. Hot, cold, dry or wet, these plants can take just about anything you can throw at them. Discover the varieties of forms, textures and colors these plants offer as well as their gifts of blooms and fragrance. Learn how to design, choose and care for these party animals that will rock your garden world. Handouts will be available.

Organic Practices in the Home Vegetable Garden
Thursday, March 7 (6:30 pm - 8:00 pm)

Building healthy soil is critical to a productive organic vegetable garden. Learn what organic matter is and how to use animal manures and composts appropriately to improve soil health without polluting nearby water bodies. Non-pesticidal controls (home remedies for pest control) may be causing more problems than they are solving. When using organic pesticides to control pests in the organic vegetable garden be sure to read and follow label directions for your safety and the safety of the environment.

Plant Propagation
Saturday, March 9 (10:00 am - Noon)

Learn the how-to of plant propagation, the production of more plants by seeds, cutting and grafting. If weather permits, we will spend some time in the Gardens collecting samples. Please bring your hand tools to class if you have them

NATURE CLASSES:

Snakes in Florida Gardens
Saturday, March 9 (1:30 pm - 3:00 pm)

Empower yourself with knowledge about Florida's 6 venomous species of snakes. Learn snake safety and feel more confident working in your garden and less surprised when encountering snakes. Get as up close and personal as your comfort level allows with some live non-venomous species that you may encounter during your outdoor activities here in FL. And learn about the benefits of a no kill rescue & relocation service for snakes that venture inside your property.

HISTORY CLASSES:

Leu House through the Years
Saturday, March 23 (2:30 pm - 4:30 pm)

This power point presentation by Al Pfeiffer offers a look at a timeline (by decade) of events that happened historically just prior to the building of what would become the Leu House Museum (1850) to the present. Included is information about the occupants and the changes they made to the house and how the gardens have grown from one couples’ dream to the public garden it is today. The lecture will end with a guided tour of the cemetery and museum.

BOTANICAL ARTS AND CRAFTS CLASSES:

Backyard Florist Workshop
Saturday, March 2 (10:00 am - 11:30 am)

Learn to make easy, one-of-a-kind floral arrangements during a hands-on workshop using readily available plant material and various types of recycled containers. All supplies will be provided, but bring your favorite floral clippers, scissors, aprons, and plant material if desired.

COOKING:

Wrap and Roll-Asian Wrappers
Saturday, March 23 (10:00 am - 1:00 pm)

Spring rolls, bite size bundles of food wrapped in paper thin spring roll or rice paper wrappers, are a traditional Chinese New Year’s treat. Fried to a beautiful golden brown, spring rolls symbolize prosperity. Rice paper wrappers are served uncooked as a wrapper for both hot and cold filings. These translucent rolls from Vietnam are as beautiful to look at as they are delicious to eat. As always subject to change due to market availability. Recipes are included. Hands-on class. Limited to 12.
