Leu Gardens provides a wide variety of gardening and garden themed classes to those in the Central Florida area (and many that drive from quite a distance). Why not start your year off with some great classes and new gardening ideas? All classes are held at the beautiful Leu Gardens, 1920 North Forest Avenue, Orlando, Florida. Nematodes in the Garden
Saturday, February 2 (10:30 am - 11:30 am)
Plant-parasitic nematodes are some of the most damaging, and least known pests to your home vegetable garden. Learn the basics of nematode biology and how they damage specific vegetables. Nematode management methods, from soil solarization to use of resistant varieties, will be discussed in detail. Get an edge over nematodes before planting your spring garden.

Wednesday, February 6 (7:00 pm - 8:30 pm)
Join our botanical records specialist in this power point presentation covering the native plants that grow in central Florida. Eric will focus on plants that are attractive, low maintenance, pest resistant, beneficial for wildlife, reasonably sized for your landscape needs, and many of which are drought tolerant. Useful handouts will be provided.

Tom & Joani's Top Picks
Monday, February 11 (6:30 pm - 8:30 pm)
It's not easy picking the best plants for your landscape -- the real performers that can add greenery, color and endurance. Tom & Joani MacCubbin have tested many plants over the years and made their top picks from trees, shrubs, ground covers and flowers. They are also going to share a few with you to take home in a class project. Learn what he likes and what she likes---they don't always agree.

Healthy Houseplants

Learn how to maintain plants in your home, simply and easy. You will be shown how to select the appropriate plants, basic pest prevention and simple techniques for maintenance and watering of interior plants. Handouts will be provided for the class.

Propagating Plants for the Vegetable Garden
Thursday, February 21 (6:30 pm - 8:00 pm)
Growing plants for the vegetable garden will get you fresh vegetables sooner than if you planted the seeds directly into the soil. Learn how to propagate plants from cuttings and seeds for use in the home vegetable garden. Recycle items in the home to use as propagation vessels such as newspaper, toilet tissue cardboard tubes, egg cartons and a few commercial vessels such as peat plugs, plastic and Styrofoam containers.

Honey Bees & Beekeeping for Beginners

Spring is in the air in Central FL & now is the time to learn all you will need to get started with your own adventure in beekeeping. Learn about what you will need to house honey bees, how to fuel & light a smoker, and how to protect yourself from stings when opening your hives. Discover when & how to take your very own harvest of honey and beeswax. And ponder the fascinating natural history of this important insect for our agriculture.

BOTANICAL ARTS AND CRAFTS:
Garden Botanicals in Watercolor
Fridays, February 8 & 15 (10:00 am - 2:00 pm)
Come and paint the beautiful blooms that are growing at Leu this time of year! In this class, students will learn a traditional botanical watercolor technique using subjects from the garden. Instruction will include drawing with dark and light values and a demonstration on applying layers of transparent watercolor washes to realistically render floral specimens. Prior drawing and watercolor experience is recommended but not required. There may be a flower fee (depending on flowers available) payable to the instructor. Please bring your lunch. A materials list is available upon registration.

Hypertufa
Saturday, February 23 (10:00 am - 3:00 pm)
Wear your old clothes and bring your imagination! Hypertufa planters grace the gardens of Europe and will add character to your yard, along with saving you money on pots and providing the best possible growing environment. Learn the technique and take home four completed planters of various sizes and styles. All supplies are included, along with molds to keep and material to add color to your masterpieces. Please bring your lunch.

Spinach Feta Bread

Spinach and feta cheese are usually seen wrapped in flaky phyllo pastry dough as a savory Greek spinach pie. This bread version is hearty, satisfying and very easy to make. It can be served with Greek olives for a fantastic and easy appetizer. Roll up your sleeves and let’s start the new year “rolling in spinach feta bread”. As always subject to change due to market availability. Recipes are included. Limited to 12.

Landscape Photography
Sunday, February 3(9:00 am - 4:00 pm)
This three session workshop will cover composition, timing, lighting, weather conditions, as well as processing images on the computer. Session 1 will include classroom orientation and a lecture preparing for field work. Bring three of your favorite images (any subject-on a jump drive or CD). The 2nd session will be field work in the gardens with instructor input. We will then break for lunch, followed by classroom show and tell with critique plus image refinement techniques in Photoshop and other software. Participants should bring a digital single lens reflex camera (DSLR is preferred, but a point-&-shoot camera is ok) and a tripod if you own one.
