The April 2013 class schedule is now available. Leu Gardens provides a wide variety of gardening and garden themed classes to those in the Central Florida area (and many that drive from quite a distance). Why not start your year off with some great classes and new gardening ideas? All classes are held at the beautiful Leu Gardens, 1920 North Forest Avenue, Orlando, Florida. Please note that all classes require pre-registration.
GARDENING AND LANDSCAPING CLASSES:
Nematodes in the Garden
Saturday, April 6 (11:00 am - 12:30 pm)
Plant-parasitic nematodes are some of the most damaging, and least known pests to your home vegetable garden. Learn the basics of nematode biology and how they damage specific vegetables. Nematode management methods, from soil solarization to use of resistant varieties, will be discussed in detail. Get an edge over nematodes before planting your spring garden.

Plant Nutrition: Fertilizers and Irrigation for the Home Vegetable Garden
Thursday, April 11 (6:30 pm - 8:00 pm)
Learn the basics of plant nutrients; selecting and applying fertilizers; and understanding the relationship between water and vegetable quality and yield including the use of reclaimed water in the home vegetable garden.

Gardens to Attract Butterflies
Saturday, April 20 (9:30 am-11:30 am)
Learn to prepare an appropriate butterfly garden site by selecting the proper trees, shrubs, ground covers and larval and nectar plants to attract local and migratory butterfly species. We can take the confusion out of metamorphosis for you, and provide excellent handouts for use as reminders and shopping lists. And weather permitting, we will spend some observation time of the plants and different butterflies found in Leu Gardens’ Butterfly Garden.

Hooked on Herbs
Monday, April 22 (6:30 pm - 8:00 pm)
This class focuses on what is an herb, from small ones used as ground covers to ones as large as trees. Learn which herbs are the easiest ones to grow, when to grow them, how to use them and how to incorporate herbs into your landscape.

Hands-On Pruning Techniques
Saturday, April 27 (10:30 am - 12:30 pm)
This class is designed to acquaint the participant with several different pruning techniques used in shaping and providing corrective pruning for small trees and shrubs. Learn the basic rules most followed when pruning. Please bring your pruners and/or loppers.

Honey Bees & Beekeeping for Beginners
Saturday, April 13 (1:30 pm - 3:00 pm)
It's a great time to start beekeeping in Central Florida so come learn what supplies you will need to start your adventure with honey bees. Discover how to house bees, how to fuel & light a smoker, and how to protect yourself from stings when working in your hives. Find out how & when to harvest honey & beeswax. And ponder how this fascinating insect is so important as a pollinator for our agriculture & your own yard!

HISTORY CLASSES:
Mizell Family Cemetery
Saturday, April 27 (10:00 am – Noon)
Do you know there is a cemetery on the grounds at Leu Gardens? If so, do you know how many people are actually buried in the Mizell Family Cemetery and who and where they are? This presentation is the result of recent in-depth research on the deaths of Mizell family members and contains significant historical information never previously compiled to determine who is and who is not in the cemetery. Following the presentation there will be a field trip to the cemetery.

BOTANICAL ARTS AND CRAFTS CLASSES:
Landscape Drawing Class in Water-soluble Pencil
Friday & Saturday April 5 & 6 (10:00 am - 2:00 pm)
Come and enjoy this outdoor workshop while the gardens display their seasonal beauty. Learn the fundamentals of landscape drawing and how to apply color using the versatile and exciting medium of water-soluble pencils. A materials list will be sent upon registration.
