Letterman fesses up to departure: He put a woman between rock and hard place

David Letterman’s decision to retire came unexpectedly and folks are still fishing to see if there is some mysterious reason for his exit announcement. Friday night’s Late Show couldn’t go without some kind of monologue about the late night’s star decision to leave the limelight of the talk show stage.

As MSN News reports on April 5, the jokes ran the gamut on Friday's show and Letterman had a quip for everything that he had been asked about his pending departure. Letterman said:

"People are saying to me, 'Honestly quit the wise remarks [and] screwing around, why did you decide to announce your retirement?”’

This is when Letterman said that his decision actually hinged on something that his long-time makeup artist Jane had said to him. In a recent conversation with Jane, what she had to say to Letterman helped him make his decision. He said:

"She says to me, 'Dave, there's really nothing more I can do."

Apparently Letterman put his friend and co-worker Jane between a rock and a hard place, so to alleviate her angst, he's bowing out. Apparently Letterman was conveying that as creative as Jane may be, you can do just so much when painting on a worn out canvas!

Anyway you look at it, Letterman and his face will be missed by the folks who faithfully tune in to end the day with a few belly laughs before going to bed. He is one heck of an entertainer.

This joke got him a roar from the crowd and it also reminded his fans why they tune in night after night to watch Letterman. It is because he can make fun of himself just as easily as he pokes fun at others! You can check out the quick clip above in the video.
