Nothing is guaranteed on America's Got Talent. Any good will may be compromised, any edge may be lost, and any advantage may be squandered.
So far, nothing has demonstrated this on America's Got Talent as much as Alizma.
One persistent trend that took five years for AGT to shake was the obvious favoritism towards country, ethnic and/or folk acts like Celtic Spring, The Duttons and The Taubl Family. No matter how poorly they performed or how childishly defiant they were in the face of criticism, they always seemed to advance further than they actually deserved.
Season 4 was arguably the worst victim of this obvious favoritism, with Grandma Lee, The Texas Tenors and Kevin Skinner all making it to the finale, with the latter actually winning overall.
But as prominent as this spoiler vote may have been, it could have been to an even greater degree if the Alizma triplets had any sense in them.
Every expectation was that they would make the Top 10 because they were actually talented. They struggled vocally, as Piers Morgan pointed out, but overcompensated for it by being exceptionally talented magicians.
Unfortunately, this critique was evidently too much for Alizma to deal with.
The smart thing would have been to take Morgan's critique to heart and place less emphasis on their vocals and more on their instruments.
Instead, Alizma chose to do the opposite. They decided they were going to prove to Morgan that they could sing by forsaking their instruments altogether and doing nothing but sing.
Their performance ended with one of the triplets letting out a glass-shattering shriek that finally got even Hasselhoff to hit his buzzer.
And yet, even in spite of it being spelled out to them in the clearest form possible, they still didn't get it, with the offending banshee even insisting on doing the ear-splitting note again for a second opinion.
The AGT judges may be renowned for their incompetence, but that doesn't mean their advice should be disregarded 100% of the time and that acts should always plead the opposite. In their assessment of Alizma, the judges were correct.
Unfortunately, thanks to this unforgivably stupid act of defiance by the triplets, few people even remember this being an act of any redeeming quality at all. All they are remembered as now is the first of the ethnic family acts to buck the trend.
