Letdown Month 2013: #1

#1: David & Dania (Season 1)

After seven years of America's Got Talent, there is still absolutely nothing that says "letdown" more than David & Dania.

This act, quite literally, had nothing else to offer.

Plenty of acts on AGT were proverbial one-trick ponies. Some, like the Sandou Trio, Polina Volchek and the Rhinestone Ropers, were good at one thing which they determined was not good enough for a full show and tried to fudge their way through a round with something else. Others like Matt Wilhelm, the Olate Dogs and the Texas State Strutters remained within their comfort zones, but at least had enough common sense to mix up their routines to try and create the illusion that their talent was not severely limited.

What distinguishes David & Dania from the rest is the simple fact that they made absolutely no effort whatsoever to disguise this fact. They didn't just have only one act. They only had one routine. Whether through arrogance or stupidity, David & Dania felt that they could win the entire competition by doing the exact same thing over and over again, motion for motion, detail for detail, and be damned if they would ever consider doing anything else.

In fact, David pretty much said exactly that. After Piers Morgan took them to task for the fact that they had done, literally, the exact same thing three times in a row, David unfairly compared it to a singer always singing a song and insisted that they didn't need to change anything.

As Morgan correctly responded, the more accurate comparison would be if a singer always sang the same song. If the Beatles never came out with anything after "Love Me Do," he explained, their careers would have been incredibly short-lived.

All this went in one ear and out the other for David and only incited him to anger.

Yet the most depressing thing of all is not that this act, in the most literal definition possible, had nothing else to offer. It's that America still wound up voting for it anyway, an act already mentioned during the AGT Examiner's farewell tribute.

This act was an AGT finalist. And at the finals, they did what everyone should have expected: The exact same routine they had already done three times before, followed by David sneering into the cameras and daring America to vote for them just to stick it to Piers Morgan.

Only one act in AGT history has ever done this; ever done the exact same thing every single time: Mary Ellen, the current reigning absolute worst of the worst. Fitting, therefore, that the only other act to ever do this would be #1 during Letdown Month.
