Let your yoga practice soar: Nadja Tizer teaches aerial yoga in Denver

Want to get your yoga practice off the ground or take it to new heights? Aerial Yoga, which uses a silk fabric hammock to suspend the body, is gaining in popularity around the country. The fabric hammock supports the weight of the participant, providing the unique opportunity to hang upside-down and invert without the risk of neck and spinal injury (to be avoided if inversions are contraindicated for you). Aerial yoga also uses gravity to deepen the poses.

It seems that Nadja Tizer was destined to become an Aerial Yoga teacher and aerial performer. Tizer began practicing vinyasa yoga in 2004 and completed her yoga teacher certification at CorePower Yoga in 2008. While Tizer loved the moving arts as a kid, health issues sidelined her in adulthood until she discovered yoga. Following a diagnosis of MS, yoga was her path to moving back into her body and into better health.

Tizer took Josh McGirk’s first Aeriality Aerial Yoga teacher training and began teaching Aerial Yoga. Between teaching Aerial Yoga and watching her professional aerial performer sister perform, Tizer “fell into” teaching aerial. She began performing on hoop and founded her company Firebird Moving Arts last year.

Tizer pursues the aerial arts because she loves it. For now, she is teaching aerial and yoga classes throughout the Denver metro area but perhaps, someday, she’ll open her own aerial arts studio. Because she has experienced her own health challenges, she is an exceptionally empathetic and caring teacher. She welcomes all ages and abilities in her classes and feels strongly about meeting students where they are.

Tizer teaches Aerial Basics at Aerial Dance over Denver on Monday nights, a class that combines fitness and dance and uses hoops, trapeze, and fabric. She co-teaches the Aerial Yoga class there on Sunday mornings with Aeriality creator Josh McGirk and other Aeriality teachers. No yoga or aerial experience is necessary to participate. Tizer’s Intro to Aerial Yoga is offered on Thursday evenings at Mirass Aerial, with classes held at Apex Movement in Englewood. Her hatha yoga class is Tuesday afternoons at Harmony Yoga. Additionally, Tizer offers “Cirque Yoga” at the Denver Green School of Enrichment. As the sole proprietor of Denver Yoga 4 Kids and a school teacher half time, Tizer created “Cirque Yoga,” her unique blend of kids yoga and Acroyoga.
