Let the sculpting begin

The snow has been blocked and packed, as Tuesday kicked off the carving phase of the 21st Annual Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships being held in Breckenridge, Colorado. For four days, 15 teams from 8 countries will be sculpting intricate works of art featuring scenes and cultures from all over the world. International representatives include Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands and Sweden, while United States participants hail from Alaska; Breckenridge, Colorado; Loveland, Colorado; Wisconsin and Vermont.

The carving officially halts Saturday January 25th at 10:00 a.m. The final works will be judged in various categories – including “People’s Choice,” where for $1 a vote you can choose your favorite. An awards ceremony to be held on Sunday the 30th at 3:00 p.m.

This event is best appreciated over time. Watching sculptures materialize over the five days from a massive block of snow to magnificent works of art is clearly magical. Viewing the sculptures at night under bright spotlights is also quite the delight. Weather permitting, the sculptures will remain standing until February 6th.
