Let the good times roll with a gluten-free king cake

Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, which is celebrated the day before Lent begins. This ‘holiday’ is highlighted for some by consuming copious amounts of alcohol and by indulging on a King Cake.

A King Cake is a cinnamon-roll type cake that is traditionally covered with bands of green, purple and gold icing (purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for power). The cake comes with the same three colors of beads and a plastic baby inside or underneath it. If the baby is in your piece, you are supposed to have good luck for the remainder of the year.

Growing up we didn't celebrate Mardi Gras, so I have never tried a king cake gluten free or otherwise, but I hear they are quite tasty. If you are looking to purchase a gluten-free king cake, fear not because there are three dedicated gluten-free bakeries that make and ship them nationwide:

Magnolia Manor Sweets – is offering gluten, dairy, soy, and nut-free king cakes complete with naturally colored sugar for $45. Each three pound cake is shipped in an official box with beads and a plastic baby. An egg-free version of this cake can also be ordered. This dedicated bakery ships nationwide and offers a discount for local pick-ups.

Rheinlander Bakery - has a 12" king cake complete with baby and beads that comes filled with either cream cheese or cinnamon. This bakery donates 10% of all king cake sales to a worthy case and this year that is the Red Cross' National Disaster Relief Fund. They have been making this donation since 2005 and Hurricane Katrina stuck. $27.98 per cake plus shipping.

The Peace Bakery - is a dedicated gluten-free bakery located in Metairie, LA. Their King cake is vegan (no dairy or eggs), soy free, yeast free, and kosher certified. A 10’ traditional cinnamon sugar cake is $25. They have started experimenting with stuffed king cakes this year and they are offering: strawberry and blueberry for $28 and cream cheese stuffed (using Daiya Foods cream cheese) for $30. These prices don’t include shipping.
