According to the World Health Organization, (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hundreds of millions of people worldwide have been diagnosed or simply suffer from high blood pressure - known in medical terms as "hypertension" or "hypertonia."
In fact, high blood pressure is the single largest true epidemic of all cardiovascular diseases. Systolic pressure (blood pressure peeks caused by the normal contraction of the heart) of 140 and diastolic pressure (the blood pressure in the arteries when the heart is relaxed) of 90 are generally regarded in the medical profession as the upper limits of "normal" blood pressure levels.
In diagnosis, if the cause of a person's hypertension can be established, the hypertensive state is called "Secondary Hypertension." This means that it occurs secondary to some other known disorder. Is no specific cause for the hypertension can be established, the hypertension is designated as "Essential" or "Primary Hypertension" and these terms, "essential" or "primary" may sound very impressive, especially hearing them from your medical practitioner, but they simply mean; "We don't know the cause." Unfortunately, the so-called "essential" hypertension comprised about 80% of all cases of high blood pressure.
With high blood pressure, essentially what is happening is there is a lack of essential nutrients to the cells leading to degeneration, thickening and less elastic arterial walls, known as "arteriosclerosis" and to an increase in arterial wall tension. Thus, the blood pressure is increased.
The tension of the vascular wall in particular is increased by a lack of natural relaxing factors normally produced in sufficient amounts by the cells covering the inside of the arteries and decreased by an insufficient amount.
With the increase in clinical studies and research reports exposing the sometimes fatal effects of commonly prescribed blood pressure pills, some natural remedies for high blood pressure may be worth taking a look at and consulting your practitioner about. These include:
- Vitamin C
- Lipoic Acid
- Vitamin E
- Co-enzyme Q10
These supplements, together with other nutrients, are especially vital in providing cells with the ingredients needed in order to remedy high blood pressure conditions and repair the arteries. All can be obtained from a vitamin or health food store, but we recommend you consult a qualified, trained and knowledgeable nutritionist or medical practitioner.
A further note on Magnesium:
This mineral is essential for the activation of approximately 300 enzymes in the human body. It is a potent natural artery wall relaxant. If there is a lack of sufficient magnesium, more calcium streams into the blood vessel muscle cells making them more prone to contract and also increasing the blood vessel constricting effect of the body's own blood pressure. 50% of patients who have low levels of magnesium or a general magnesium deficiency also have high blood pressure. Their blood pressure is usually easily normalized by magnesium supplementation.
Magnesium deficiencies are quite common because of the following reasons:
- Chemical fertilizers used to grow grain, fruit and vegetables very often do not contain any magnesium thus leading to a magnesium-deficient diet.
- Caffeine increases magnesium excretion via the kidneys.
- Too much sugar - such as found in most soft drinks and many foods - increased metabolic magnesium consumption and excretion through the kidneys.
- High dietary protein intake increases metabolic magnesium consumption and excretion through the kidneys.
Calcium optimizes mineral metabolism, decreases artery wall tension and lowers elevated blood pressure.
Vitamin E is an important antioxidant that protects cell membranes (the actual cell walls). For cardiovascular disease, this is especially important for the cells or the inside of the blood vessels.
Of course, any blood pressure remedy should always be supervised by a qualified medical practitioner who usually monitors the blood pressure regularly and adjusts accordingly any medication or supplementation their patient is taking. Otherwise the blood pressure could also drop too low.
Be smart about it. It's your life.
