What is abstract art?
Abstract art is defined as a visual language of form, color, and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.
That is a mouthful! In layman's terms, abstract art is visual persception of realtiy convenyed by the artist. The departure from accurate representation can be slight, partial, or complete.
Among the numerous art movements that embody partial abstraction would be fauvism, in which color is deliberately altered from reality, and cubism, which blatantly alters the forms of real life. Great abstract artists include Wassily Kandinsky, Andre' Derain, Henri Matisse and of course, Pablo Picasso. These pioneers had an enormous impact on 20th century art, and led to the invention of 20th century abstraction.
For the modern art collector, abstract art can work in any number of settings including homes and offices where imagery is not important, but color and design can enhance a space.
