Let's start a nursing resume

Cathie is a licensed head nurse in a nursing home. She enjoys her job, but has decided she is ready for something different. She found a listing for a LPN at a specialty center in their otolaryngology department.

This position requires specific schooling and experience:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current LPN licensure
  • Current CPR certification required within 6 months of hire and maintain
  • One-year full-time employment as a LPN
  • Demonstration of written and oral communication skills required
  • Experience with ENT or in a specialty setting

It is ideal to list education and experience after career objective; otherwise they may not take the time to find the information. Remember, there are many people applying for this position: your resume needs to be easy to read.

Use your resources: Researching this company will guide you in adding pertinent information. Per the website: This center prides itself on "providing outstanding patient care" and has been noted as one of the "best places to work in health care." Try to show these traits in your experience and skills.

This center is going to want someone who can work with a team and is detail oriented. One way to show your team spirit is to keep "I" to a minimum when describing your responsibilities and past work experiences. Proofreading and utilizing spell check to minimize mistakes will show pride in your work. This is very important in the medical field, where medications and dosing need to be correct.

Skills should be listed after experience and schooling, but make sure they compliment your experiences and confirm what you have already stated.

Remember: this position will be getting many resumes and applications. Make yours standout, easy-to-read, and professional.

Some nursing templates online looked like a big paragraph- very wordy and time consuming. Skills and qualifications did not standout. With so many resumes to go through, they are not going to take extra time to search for your qualifications. Bullets are great to use, they stand out and make it easy to read.

Below is a resume that may be changed to fit what Cathie needs it for. The resume template is in red. After the sample, I rearranged the topics, shortened explanations, and took out items I thought would be better said than written: Teamwork needed to standout.

There are many different ways to make a resume your own and have it say what you need them to know. You can even design your own template with word, excel, or any other typing program you use. Remember, you want it to look professional and be easy to read- go easy on the font and adding a lot of colors/shapes.
