Are you looking for a magazine for your LGBT family? Lesbian parent Hannah Latham wanted one, creating the new magazine We are Family, the UK's first alternative family magazine.
We Are Family focuses on a wide-range of topics. Some of the issues the magazine has already tackled includes:
-Discussing gender with children.
Latham and her partner Rowena are currently raising two sons, three-year old Noah and four-month old Eli. Having gone through a decade long battle to become a co-parent with Rowena, Latham's idea of creating a LGBT parenting magazine had been slowly incubating.
Experiencing some isolation co-parenting with Rowena, Latham told Camilla Palmer of The Guardian, "Of course we weren't (isolated)- it just felt like that. And if we felt isolated, imagine what gay and lesbian couples felt like in the 1980s and 1990s."
According to The Office of National Statistics research in 2012, 12,000 UK same-sex couples were raising children, via adoption or artificial insemination. These numbers differ significantly in the United States. The Family Equality Council website states that approximately 3 million LGBT parents in the United States are raising 6 million children.
What other reasons motivated Latham to create We Are Family? With three released issues under her belt, Latham wanted something for LGBT parents that she had not seen on UK bookshelves: a guidebook.
"When we were going through all of this, we really needed a guidebook. The nuts and bolts issues- how to choose a clinic or donor; how to embark on co-parenting; how to talk about sexuality with your children- are crucial to people in our community who want to become parent or become better ones," said Latham, as stated on www.theguardian.com.
Besides mailing copies of the magazine to doctors, donor and fertility clinics, and libraries internationaliy, Latham has also created a We Are Familiy website. The site not only offers an inside view of the magazine, it also offers links and directories for adoption and foster agencies, upcoming LGBT events, and community and support groups.
