ABC News reported on February 11, 2013 that the lesbian bride has accepted the free cake offer from Chef Duff Goldman of “Charm City Cakes” and formerly of “Ace of Cakes”.
It was only reported by the Huffington Post that on February 5, 2013 the lesbian bride who has now been identified as Laurel Bowman of Portland, Oregon was denied a same sex wedding cake from Sweet Cakes Bakery by Melissa in Gresham, Portland.
Adam Klein and his wife Melissa are the owners of Sweet Cakes Bakery. Aaron Klein said the reason he denied doing the cake was because of his religious beliefs. The Klein’s believe marriage is a religious institution ordained by God.
This news about this wedding cake has become controversial. There has been support for the Kleins in this matter and as well as harsh backlash for them.
Some supporters appreciate Mr. Klein standing up for what he believes is right. Others feel in this day in age that he should be more open minded, and should have made the cake for the lesbian bride Ms. Bowman.
Sweet Cakes Bakery is currently under investigation by the state’s Oregon Attorney General’s for possible violation of Oregon Equality Act of 2007 which prohibits discrimination against people based on gender identity and sexual orientation according to the report.
There has been protests by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) groups outside of Sweet Cake Bakery. However the Kleins’ says business is booming for them and they are selling out of cupcakes.
Chef Duff Goldman hosted a show on The Food Network from 2006-2011 called “Ace of Cakes”. Chef Goldman is the owner of Charm City Cakes in Baltimore, Maryland. Chef Goldman is phenomenal at his cake artistry work. He was chosen as the chef to make the 2013 inaugural ball cake for President Obama’s second term.
Chef Goldman conducted a live stream last week on the Huffington Post and sent out various tweets to reach out to Ms, Bowman (at the time known as the lesbian bride) and her fiancée to offer his cake service and delivery to Portland, Oregon for a free cake. As he states “injustice involving a cake” took place and he could do something about it.
Chef Goldman and his team have been making same sex wedding and celebration cakes for some time now.
Chef Goldman and his team will be hard at work making Ms. Bowman and her fiancée cake as they have accepted the offer. However he will not be making a traditional wedding cake as Mrs. Bowman had already purchased a wedding cake from a local baker Laura Widner.
The cake Chef Goldman and his team will now make is a second “bride’s cake” which will be sort of like a grooms cake.
