Les Misérables is one of the most engaging, heart-grabbing, redemptive classic stories of all time. It is a winner again and again in its various forms and transformations. Over and over this story has inspired hope, compassion, and faith in times that these virtues have been desperately needed. This fine new musical movie came out in theaters recently on Christmas day, during a Christmas season blighted by violence and tragedy, especially towards some of the most innocent among us.
Les Misérables, an historical novel was written by Victor Hugo in 1862. His father was one of Napoléon’s generals. He grew up in Paris, during Napoléonic wars. His classic works are known for grand themes of compassion and sacrificial love in the midst of horror and misery.
In Les Misérables, Bishop Myriel shows Jean Valjean, a former unjustly treated convict, mercy, forgiveness, and unconditional love. This ultimately transforms Valjean and he extends mercy and compassion to other miserable people for the rest of his life.
Hugo's novel, Les Misérables, has inspired many fine movies and musicals. See http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1707386/. I applaud that the Golden Globes have now bestowed honors on the latest Les Misérables movie, a musical. See http://www.goldenglobes.org :
