When composer and pianist Lera Auerbach last appeared in Herbst Theatre for a San Francisco Performances (SFP) event in April of 2010, she performed with cellist Alisa Weilerstein in one of the most imaginatively conceived programs of the season. This involved a coupling of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Opus 34 piano preludes, played as a duet for cello and piano, with Auerbach’s own set of 24 preludes for cello with piano accompaniment. Next month Auerbach and Weilerstein will return to SFP, this time in the company of the Georgian-born soprano Lina Tetriani, for another innovative program, supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
This return visit will consist entirely of Auerbach’s own compositions, beginning with “Last Letter,” which will feature all three performers. In addition Auerbach will perform another of her sets of 24 preludes, this time the first one she composed, which is for solo piano. The remaining work on the program will be a performance of her cello sonata with Weilerstein.
This recital will take place at 8 PM on Wednesday, March 14 (originally scheduled for March 13), in Herbst Theatre (410 Van Ness Avenue). Tickets are on sale for $60, $50, and $38. Further information may be obtained from SFP at 415-392-2545. Tickets may also be purchased through the Web page for this event.
