The effects of Tropical Storm Sendong linger in the Visayas area of the Philippines as the Department of Health Thursday declares a leptospirosis outbreak in Tanjay City in the province of Negros Oriental.
Primarily two barangays (villages) that suffered intense flooding in the city, Barangays 4 and 6, is where the bulk of the cases occurred.
All total according to a Visayan Daily Star report Friday, Dr. Socrates Villamor, head of the DOH’s Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit in Negros Oriental, said that as of yesterday, 39 leptospirosis cases with one death had been recorded in the province.
Tanjay City easily lead in cases (26) of the bacterial disease which included the one fatality, while Dumaguete City was second with three cases.
The Daily Star goes on to report the DOH continues to provide free antibiotics to residents in Tanjay and other areas for patients afflicted with leptospirosis, and those with history of wading in contaminated floodwater, as prophylactic treatment according to Dr. Villamor.
The DOH head also advises the public that if you exhibit the symptoms of leptospirosis to immediately see their health care provider.
