Master conductor Leonard Slatkin will perform a thrilling program including the works of Copland, Brahms and Rachmaninoff when the Detroit Symphony Orchestra comes to Miami to close out the month.

The concert, which will be held Friday, Feb. 28, will feature Copland's "Three American Sketches," the instantly recognizable "Symphony No. 4" by Brahms, and "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini," one of Rachmaninoff's most popular and ravishing works. The concert will take place in the Knight Concert Hall at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

The evening will feature pianist Olga Kern, who is described by the New York Times as "an absolute whiz at the piano" and is recognized as one of the finest pianists of her generation. She won the first Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition when she was only 17.

"Bringing here this magnificent American orchestra embodies the mission of our 2013-2014 Knight Masterworks Series, to celebrate the richness and diversity of our nation's and the world's most widely acclaimed classical musical treasures, building on what is now a new cultural tradition in Miami," said John Richard, president and CEO of the Arsht Center.

"This concert by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra signals the Arsht Center's ongoing commitment to presenting extraordinary classical music throughout the season," he added.

A free pre-concert lecture will be offered at 7 p.m.

In addition, as part of the Arsht Center's new "Student Access Program," a complimentary ticket to anyone between the ages of eight and 18 will be given with the purchase of a subscription of a full-priced single ticket by an adult guardian. Check for details at the Arsht Center website or by calling the box office.
