Pop singer Leona Lewis has Simon Cowell convinced to go meatless on Mondays. The "Meatless Mondays" trend started byBeatles man Paul McCartney.
But this isn't Simon Cowell's first brush with animal activism. Cowell took a particular interest when an aspiring American Idol contestant left his dog in a hot car with the windows rolled up during auditions. A PETA-endorsed PSA aired starring Cowell and put the spotlight on the deadly consequences of leaving animals in hot cars.
Now he's taking it further thanks to singer Leona Lewis, who says Simon's always on board to back up her charity work and get involved.
"Anything I ask Simon to get involved in regarding my charity and environmental concerns he always does,” Lewis said in a recent interview. “He’s cool like that.”
Other stars who are "cool" with "Meatless Mondays" include model Kate Moss, who last month adopted the practice to appeal to one of her close friends, Stella McCartney. Also on board with limiting meat consumption on Mondays is actress Gwyneth Paltrow.
And while Paltrow and Paul McCartney were the first ones to team up and spread the idea via her eco-loving website GOOP.com, Paul's been encouraging anti-meat eating for years. Most recently, he wrote an open letter to Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson asking her to sign on to "Meatless Mondays".
"It’s amazingly easy to take one day in your week, Monday or any other day, and not eat meat," McCartney said on Paltrow's site. "All it means is that you have to think a bit about what you’ll eat that day but, in actual fact, far from being a chore, it’s a fun challenge."
Leona Lewis, an all-the-time-non-meat-eater (aka vegetarian) agrees. Enough to work her magic persuasion on Simon Cowell. But she's a lady who's convinced and there's passion behind her pursuit.
“The meat industry is polluting the environment,” Lewis added in her interview to the press. “I’ve banned meat from all photo shoots to the tour itself simply because I don’t support the meat industry.”
Speaking of photo shoots, it's been asked if Leona cares enough about the issue to strip off her clothes for PETA - Like the State of the Union Undressed campaign, porn star Sasha Grey, Bethenny Frankel and Pamela Anderson.
"I would love to do a campaign for them in the future," she said, according to AngryApe.com. "I'd definitely look to do something if it was done tastefully and for the plight of animals everywhere around the world."
Should Leona choose to take on a "tasteful" campaign with PETA, she'd join other celebrities who have posed for PETA without taking off their clothes - Or, at least, all of them. R&B singer Mario recent did a campaign for PETA along with celebrity face and Lakers' player Ron Artest. In the ranks also includes First Lady Michelle Obama and others.
