Two weeks into Lent and we checked in on Caroline Diperna, 22, of Allison Park, whom gave up bread for Lent.
How is life without bread thus far, Caroline?
I lost four pounds since the beginning of Lent! It has been hard, I miss eating bread but in a way I feel healthier because I am eating more fruit and vegetables.
What falls into your category of “bread” for Lent?
All bread products such as pizza, rolls, biscuits, bagels, English muffins and of course any type of sandwich.
Have you had any great temptations?
Yes! My mom made breakfast one morning when my sisters were home from college, they had raisin walnut bread and I wanted it in the worst way. Then once when my grandmother made us dinner, she had biscuits! Sometimes I just ask to smell the bread!
I understand a co-worker is also participating in this sacrifice with you, how is she doing?
She has lost 2 pounds so far! It has been so helpful to have a partner in this. We sit and discuss how much we miss bread when we are together! We attended a pasta dinner at Wyland Elementary last week to help support the kids we have at our after school program and had to tell them to hold the bread! We have made plans to go to the Olive Garden when Lent is over to eat the breadsticks!
Caroline also mentioned that she is considering continuing eating less bread once Lent is over! We will continue to follow Caroline as she makes her Lenten breadless journey these next week weeks!
