Lent: Why marriage and ordained celibacy are under attack

See also

God created human sexuality.

And everything that God created He ordained as 'good.' Everyone, moreover, is sexual, in the fact that everyone lives the gift of the gender that God has given them, whether they are celibate, or married. For God's plan has come in two parts:

The first part is in the primordial Sacrament of Marriage, between a man and a woman, when two become one in selfless love, reflecting both the Life of the Trinity and the Love of Jesus for His Bride the Church. This Love is always open to Life. Marital sexuality, therefore, must be both procreative and self-giving all the time.

The second part of God's plan was initiated in the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. Fully respecting the vocation to marriage, Jesus called (and exemplified), men and women to live in a new and revolutionary way for the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God--to live unattached to earthly things through a total self-gift of self through celibacy.

But the devil has wormed his way into the plan, distorting sexuality, destroying marriage, attacking celibacy and the priesthood, while bringing sin and misery into the world through hypocrisy and lies.

"Hear the word of the LORD, princes of Sodom! Listen to the instruction of our God, people of Gomorrah... Though your sins be like scarlet, they may become white as snow; Though they be crimson red, they may become white as wool." Isaiah 1:10, 16-20

The devil has perpetrated the greatest illusion in the history of magic!

He has created an atmosphere, fertilized by faulty philosophy, bad history, unethical science, and bad intent, where the Judaeo-Christian religion is believed to be myth, and perceived to be a threat to personal human freedom.

Jesus has become a hate criminal, and His Cross is a hate crime; for Christian Truth and Christian morality run antithetical to the devil's ways.

Within the vacuum set up by the disparaging of Judaeo-Christianity, secularism, socialism, and all sorts of pop ideologies have set up camp and made big business of promiscuity, pornography, relativism, abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, race warfare, entitlement, violent entertainment, and individualism.

Sodom and Gomorrah have tinged America with scarlet sinfulness. God forgives, if only we (re)turn to Him.

"Why do you recite my statutes, and profess my covenant with your mouth, Though you hate discipline and cast my words behind you?” Psalm 50:8-9, 16-17, 21, 23

So why does traditional marriage and ordained celibacy threaten the 'powers that be?'

First, marriage and celibacy, though appearing as contradictory and in competition with each other, support each other in the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God. Both are Sacraments of Christ's Church, both require a total self giving reliant on self-discipline that can only come from the grace of God. Both involve parenthood--responsible parenthood; marriage in the procreation and parenthood of children, ordination in the inspiration of spiritual children of God through baptism and the faith of the Church. Both are staunchly pro-Life; both seek the sole interest of God in holiness, happiness, and growth. Both reflect Jesus Christ as Spouse of the Church and High Priest from His Cross.

Both require fidelity, faith, and reliance on God's grace. Both are anathema to the devil's society. Hence, both are under attack.

"The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example." Matthew 23:1-12

Judaeo-Christianity certainly finds itself, in America, between a rock and a hard place.

Damned if we do (faithfully follow our faith), damned if we don't (we are ridiculed as hypocrites). What makes matters worse is that we are taught by Jesus to 'give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to give to God what belongs to God.'

Yet, Jesus' directive is the key!

We must follow the rules and laws of our society which are in direct line with the gospel, and the teaching of the Church. All else must be cast into the water like a new Boston Tea Party! All attacks on marriage and ordained celibacy must be met with a swift and strong rebuke of faithful support for these vital institutions. All attacks on life must be met with like energy. Caesar must be taught his rightful place.

And his rightful place is not in our faith walk, our family lives, nor is it in our conscience.

Let us pray, therefore, that this Lent will inspire Judaeo-Christian conversion, in the Blood of Christ, for the renewal of traditional marital fidelity, a renewal of the esteem for ordained celibacy, and the reasoned American understanding of the need for a thriving American family built upon marriage, between a man and a woman, and the Life of their children.
