Lenora Lee, a native San Franciscan dancer and choreographer, makes large-scale interdisciplinary work telling stories of Asians in American. Lee has a new piece at CounterPULSE Sept. 8 - 11, Reflections. The work, done in collaboration with Kei Lun Martial Arts, Enshin Karate, and South San Francisco Dojo, uses martial arts, video, text and music as well as Chinese lion dance to tell the story of three generations of men in her family trying to find a sense of place.
A previous work of Lee’s, Passages, dealt with the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, and in Reflections as well, Lee wants to tell stories about the challenges immigrants face coming to America. There’s a particular need, Lee thinks, to tell the stories of Asian Americans, especially in a city like San Francisco which is about 33 percent Asian American.
Reflections is at 8pm, (panel discussion September 10th) at CounterPULSE on Mission and 9th streets in San Francisco. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
