Leno mocking NBC actually upset the fourth ranked network? Apparently so, as one executive exchange a flurry of emails with the “Tonight Show” host following a recent broadcast of his show that was deemed over the top.
Jay Leno usually walks a very safe, non-offensive line with his comedy. He seems to only truly be hated by Howard Stern and more often than not, people are merely indifferent to Leno’s style of comedy rather than truly frustrated or offended.
But now, that has changed. And Leno has to worry about having ruffled the feathers of his very own boss.
Late last month, Jay suggested that NBC adopt “The Biggest Loser” as its motto. He also joked that Manti Te’o would have to bring some imaginary viewers to NBC so that they could finally catch up in the ratings race.
Despite an NBC executive being upset at the jokes, there’s no official word of whether or not Leno will stop bashing NBC.
With that said, network shows actually bashing its own network is not new. Conan O’Brien often did it routinely when he was on NBC. And through the 20+ years “The Simpsons” has been on the air, characters from that show have often taken pot shots at Fox.
