The beleaguered former New York Mets star Lenny Dykstra had a great reason to smile Saturday evening, as a long line of fans waited to greet him at Darryl Strawberry’s Sports Grill in Douglaston. Dykstra, who has earned a reputation of blowing off public appearances, kept the faithful in suspense as he arrived almost an hour late. Even with his late arrival, he made time to chat with everyone who turned out to see him, while signing autographs and posing for pictures in between bites of macaroni and cheese.
In a rare public appearance since his arrest, the once fiery sparkplug of the Mets lineup, whose face weathered by years of drug and alcohol abuse, seemed invigorated by the adulation of adoring Mets fans. He recently returned from a five-month stint in jail for failure to post bail on grand theft auto charges and is scheduled to face sentencing in January after a no-contest plea.
