Yoko Ono tweeted an unusual photo on Thursday, March 21, the day that would have been the 44th wedding anniversary of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Yahoo News reported that the controversial photo is of John Lennon's bloodied glasses, the ones he was wearing on the day he was shot to death.
The photo which is well on its way to becoming viral, was reported to have been intended to draw attention to gun violence.
"The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience," Ono later tweeted Wednesday morning. "After 33 years our son Sean and I still miss him."
Above the Lennon bloodied glasses photo reads: "Over 1,057,00 people have been killed by guns in the U.S.A. since John Lennon was shot and killed on December 8, 1980."
Yoko Ono,80, also tweeted, "We should be concerned as much about mental richness as we are about physical richness."
The Lennon bloodies glasses image is also said to very close to the same images that Yoko Ono used as the cover art on her album six months after John Lennon's death.
Yoko's album "Season of Glass" album cover shows the same bloodied glasses next to a half glass of water with the blurred, gray Manhattan skyline as background.
John Lennon was killed at the age of 40 on December,8 1980 outside of the New York apartment that he shared with his wife Yoko Ono as they returned home.
Lennon's killer was Mark David Chapman, who shot Lennon in the back four times at the entrance to the building. Lennon was taken to the emergency room of nearby Roosevelt Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival.
Earlier that evening, Lennon had autographed a copy of Double Fantasy for Chapman.
Yoko Ono issued a statement the next day, saying "There is no funeral for John," ending it with the words, "John loved and prayed for the human race. Please pray the same for him."
Chapman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years to life. As of 2012, he remains in prison, having been denied parole seven times.
