Do you think Lena Dunham is the voice of her generation?
Judd Apatow (executive producer): No, I don’t think there’s any voice of any generation, but I think she has a very strong voice and a clear vision and is doing a remarkable job with the show. The world is too diverse for there to be one voice.
How did you become an executive producer of “Girls”?
Apatow: We have the same agent, and they slipped me a DVD of her movie “Tiny Furniture,” which I thought was incredible. And I emailed her and said, “If you ever need help on anything, let me know.”
And it turned out that she was beginning to work on a TV show with Jenni Konner. And [Jenni and I] worked together on a TV show called “Undeclared.” And then they asked me to help out.
What do you have to say to people who have criticism about “Girls”?
Dunham: I think when you get criticism, you have to be elegant about it and appreciate it and understand that’s it a part of the gift of getting to put your work out into the world. I’m sure people dislike the show for plenty of reasons.
Is it true that you’re engaged?
Dunham: No, I’m not engaged. I don’t want to get married until all gay people can get married.
Do you ever disagree on what’s funny?
Dunham: [She turns to Apatow] Do we ever disagree on what’s funny?
Apatow: No, not that I can think of.
Dunham: I think everything Judd says is really funny, even if we don’t use it, we really laugh. We think Judd’s the funniest person. We always forward his emails. He’s really bad at “replying all.” We always get his emails along and then forward them to each other because they’re so funny.
What did you think about Jodie Foster’s speech tonight?
Dunham: Jodie Foster’s speech was mind-blowingly beautiful. One of the most wonderful things about the speech that Ms. Foster just gave is that was a really complex, interesting assessment about what it’s like to have a creative career over a long period of time. She wasn’t trying to hand you one moral. She was trying to express the unique point of view which makes her someone who deserves such an award.
Lena, you seem uncomfortable walking in high heels tonight. Is it as uncomfortable as it looks?
Dunham: It’s a tough gig. I feel like if I was really brave and reckless as people have acted like this show is, I would just wear flats to an event like this, but clearly, I drank the Kool-aid, and I’m wearing high heels.
As a writer, is there a certain character in “Girls” that you feel the most comfortable writing?
Dunham: I think we have so much fun inhabiting the voices, including that of the men. Sometimes you’re in a Soshanna mood, sometimes you have a Marnie joke, sometimes you have to figure out whom to assign to what. We have one writer in the room — Suzie Hayward — who dreams in the voice of Soshanna.
Can you talk about the evolution of television and why it’s the right time for a show like “Girls”?
Dunham: Working at HBO is just an incredible gift. I think it’s the only place where we can make a show like this and where they would entrust it partially to me. I think when I first came to Los Angeles, I had just made an independent film.
And I realized very quickly through talking to a variety of people that cable television was the only place where I was going to get the kinds of stories I wanted to tell funded. And I was very lucky to hook up with people who shared the same vision. And I thought Claire Danes put it really beautifully that she’s really excited to be working in this medium right now with these people.
How’s your book coming?
Dunham: I think my book’s coming really well. My editor seems generally pleased, but we’ll know when you read it and rip me a new one. I don’t know.
Why did you thank Chad Lowe?
Dunham: Because Hilary Swank forgot. And because I’m an a**hole!
