Lehigh Valley locations setting new trend in their downtown revitalization

Website,, launched last week by the Nazareth Economic Development Commission, seeks to fill the empty downtown storefronts and attract more businesses and visitors to the area.

The website features a video and information that portrays the borough's rich history, famous resident race car driver Mario Andretti, economic staple of the area Martin's Guitar, and information about shopping, dining, monthly calendars of special events, and how residents can get involved.

Using the internet as a marketing tool is the brainchild of Stephanie Varone, Nazareth's business coordinator, hired in September 2012 to revitalize and market the area. The position of business coordinator is one more unique trend of the downtown revitalization.

Quakertown, attempting to undergo its own economic resurgence, also created a business consultant position to help their town with communications, the marketing process and business development.

Larger cities in the area already have marketing positions and redevelopment specialists to assist in marketing and new construction projects:

  • Allentown's Neighborhood Improvement Zone Development Authority
  • Bethlehem's Community Revitalization and Improvement Authority
  • Easton & Reading Redevelopment Authority.

Now smaller cities in the Lehigh Valley are also getting involved in this new economic trend for downtown revitalization.
