In early June the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway had their first ever Bike Train weekend. Customers and their bikes went on a train from the station in Jim Thorpe up the scenic Lehigh Gorge to White Haven. There they retrieved their bikes and then pedaled backed down to Jim Thorpe at their own pace along the popular Lehigh Gorge Rail-Trail.
The scheduled rides for the weekend all sold out. After being so popular and patrons asking for future dates, the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway has announced three more Bike Train weekends: July 19th and 20th, August 16th and 17th, and September 20th and 21st.
The day begins in Jim Thorpe where you and your bike will board the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway for a one hour ride as the train swings onto the former Lehigh Valley main line and passes Glen Onoko, the southern gateway to the Lehigh Gorge State Park.
While you sit back and enjoy the outstanding scenery, the train will follow the winding Lehigh River for 25 miles, including going through a tunnel until you reach the village of White Haven. Here you and your bike will be dropped off at the Lehigh Gorge trailhead.
Once at the trailhead, pedal at your own pace down the Lehigh Gorge Rail-Trail (D&L Trail) for 25 miles back to Jim Thorpe. Along the way, you’ll pass canal remnants, swim spots, scenic overlooks and railroad trestles. There is potential to see various types of wildlife, plus there are several sparkling waterfalls to view which offer some great photo opportunities.
If you don’t have a bike or don’t want the hassle of bringing your own, there will be Trek bicycles which you can rent.
