Harry Potter LEGO® set fans rejoice! As part of the E3 Expo 2009 today it was announced that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and TT Games are working with The LEGO Group to create a new video game based on the first four books in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. The look of the video game will of course be drawn from the wildly popular LEGO® Harry Potter sets.
About LEGO® Harry Potter: Years 1-4
Kids will be able to play this exciting and humor-filled game as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and several other beloved characters from the books. Players will be able to participate in normal Hogwarts student activities and "attend lessons, cast spells, mix potions, fly on broomsticks and complete tasks to earn house points." Settings will include such familiar places as "Hogwarts castle, Diagon Alley, the Forbidden Forest and the village of Hogsmeade."
Gameplay will consist of a mix of "puzzle solving gameplay with exploration and battle." Whereas previous LEGO® video games may have been family-friendly but actually suitable only for older children because of battle scenes and violence (like, you know, LEGO® Anakin Skywalker getting his lower half chopped off by LEGO® Obi-Wan Kenobi), the new emphasis in this game on wandering around and exploring Harry's world will, one hopes, make it appealing to and more suitable for a younger audience.
Darker themes in Harry Potter
Why will this game cover only Harry's first four years at Hogwarts? Reelz Channel reports that a representative from The LEGO® Group indicated back in February at Toy Fair 2009 in New York that the LEGO® Group had no plans to make any future Harry Potter-themed sets, explaining "With the films getting darker, it has become harder to produce kid-friendly sets." In a post today, Reelz Channel speculates convincingly that limiting the time span of the game to the first four years at Hogwarts sidesteps the darkness issue for now, but adds that the LEGO® Group and Warner Bros. may be left unable to make a family-friendly sequel with the material left in the remaining three books.
Not to spoil it for those who have not read the books yet (both of you), but yes, it would definitely be difficult for a family-friendly LEGO® game to deal with the many shocking deaths that occur in the latter part of the series.
And now, enjoy the trailer to the upcoming LEGO® Harry Potter video game!

aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh cant wait
SWEET! So can't wait!!!!!
I am excited. It is nice to have the Potter gang in Legos! I can understand why the company doesn't want a game for books 5-7! It is nice to keep the games kid-friendly. Still, there are older HP fans who would love to see those novels in game form also.
Maybe a sequel will not be easy to make child friendly, but take a look at star wars and indiana jones: there are lego men dying in. Like they said about anakin, but what about the lat crusade from indy: a lego men become a skeleton and dies. So I don't understand why they would'n make a sequel. Maybe they can make a sequel for 7+ or 12+
why dont you make LORD OF THE RINGS lego's
Does anyone know if this game will be on the wii?
@lego harry potter, I agree the other LEGO® games are violent and that it would of course be possible to make a sequel for an older age range. The nice thing about the Harry Potter LEGO® game, though, is that finally there will be a LEGO® video game suitable for younger gamers, and then it will be a shame that they may have to wait several years to be old enough to play the possible sequel.
@ Jacob Hyer Litteral, Chances are a LEGO® LOTR games is in the early planning stages, possibly for release when The Hobbit movie comes out in 2012. Many bloggers were buzzing back in March about a leaked CV from someone at Traveler Games who had listed one of her jobs as working on a demo pitch for just such a game.
@Jordan, the official announcement did not specify any of the platforms this game will play on. I think we'll all be very surprised if they don't make a wii version, though.
This looks absolutely amazing! I havent played any of the LEGO games before!

This is cool, it does kind of suck that they may not make a 2nd Game with books 5-7, but they didn't say they are completely not making it, so let's keep our hopes up, to much.

I realise they are trying to make these more "family friendly" but these same families will be going to see the 7th movie when it comes out and it is also likely the kids have already read the books and know what happens, so why not make a sequel game? Gahhh!
there will be games for the other books but not lego games i think since the 5th one already has a game there just saying the other books 5 -7 wont have lego game and no lego sets
Got something to say?
