Legislative bills deal with problem of wage theft

Working people who are cheated out of their wages may get some relief from the Florida Legislature.

Two bills have been proposed in the Legislature that might help people who now have to go to court to fight for lost wages. SB 1216, filed by Senator Rob Bradley would turn wage theft problems over to Florida Small Claims Court but allow a county or city to collect the money owed to a worker. The House companion bill, HB 1125 has been filed by Representative Tom Goodson, according to an article by Marcia Heroux Pounds in the March 6 Sun Sentinel.

"I think this would be a good law. Too many people have been taken advantage of by employers. Many people who have struggled have not been treated fairly by employers," said Marianne Brinson, a Miami resident.
