Southern Methodist University’s Multicultural Student Affairs, the Association of Black Students (ABS) and the Department of English present Nikki Giovanni! The event, which is free and open to the public, kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, February 3, 2012 at the Hughes-Trigg Student Center Theater on SMU’s campus. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to be up-close and personal with a legendary thought leader and one of the most widely-read American poets to date.
Who is Nikki Giovanni? Poet. Activist. Professor. Writer. Lecturer. Commentator. Giovanni is a fascinating, multi-faceted literary phenom who has made an indelible imprint on society's cultural landscape. She is equally known for her artistic voice as for her support of civil rights and equality. Her fearless and defiant works, including Gemini, Racism 101, and Blues: For All the Changes have garnered critical acclaim and led to many awards and honors. Crowned by Oprah Winfrey as one of the twenty-five “Living Legends” and named as Ebony Magazine’s Woman of the Year (1970), Giovanni continues to inspire and cultivate vision in legions of admirers.
SMU student Tanisha Boyd is ecstatic about Giovanni coming to speak in honor of Black History Month. "Even for someone unfamiliar with her literary work, Nikki is truly a legend who has spoken out against hatred of any kind. She advocates for the individual power we all possess to make a difference," says Boyd.
