It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers.

She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.

Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated.

My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.

Earlier this week Rivers’ family were reportedly cautiously optimistic as doctors began bringing her out of a medically induced coma. Just yesterday it was announced that Rivers was moved to a private room and was resting comfortably. News of Rivers passing comes just hours after confirmation that the New York Department of Health will be investigating the circumstances of Joan Rivers’ medical emergency and eventual death.

Career

Joan Rivers star began to shine after a guest appearance on the “The Tonight Show” in 1965 hosted then by Johnny Carson. Being a funny lady on TV, Rivers broke new ground at the time by making reference to her pregnancy during an appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show”.

In more recent years Rivers had become known for her red carpet interviews and fashion smack downs. Her trademark line to celebs on the red carpet, “Who are you wearing?” Friends or not, Rivers never shied away from calling out someone for wearing horrible fashion in public. Her fashion sense has been parlayed into her own line of women’s fashions and jewelry sold on the QVC cable network.

Besides her numerous television appearances including “Fashion Police” on the E! Network and her standup comedy performances; Rivers was a New York Times Bestselling Author. Her latest book Diary of a Mad Diva, Rivers makes mention of no less than 135 celebs who are often times the fodder for her jokes.

Joan Rivers’ funeral will be held in New York City at Temple Emanu-El on Sunday. Additional details including whether the funeral will be open to the public have not been disclosed. Rivers had a huge following which included more than 2 million Twitter followers.
